Kerala government school introduces gender-neutral uniforms
Gender-neutral uniforms are to be introduced in a government school in Kerala, India. The new uniform consists of just shirts and shorts and is to be worn by students of all classes.
“This is particularly convenient for girls who can play easily now. We were initially worried about the reaction from parents who might want their girls to continue wearing skirts. But most parents have welcomed the idea,” says the school’s headmistress Raji C. She also reports that their enrollment numbers have increased since the change in uniforms.
This change comes after a 2018 trail where students in the pre-primary section were successfully introduced to the gender-neutral uniform.
