Berkeley's municipal code to become more gender-neutral

Changes are being made to Berkeley’s municipal code so that it is more gender-neutral. Words such as “manhole” will be changed to “maintenance hole”, while the word “manpower” will be substituted with “human effort”. The code will also eliminate any masculine or feminine language by using gender-neutral pronounce such as “they” or “them”.

Other words that will be changed are:

  • "Manmade" to "human-made" or "machine-made"

  • "Pregnant" to "pregnant employee"

  • "Master" to "captain"

  • “Watchmen” to “guards”

  • "Repairman” to “repairer”

About the changes, Council member Rigel Robinson said: "Our laws are for everyone, and our municipal code should reflect that. Women and non-binary individuals are just as entitled to accurate representation. Having a male-centric municipal code is inaccurate and not reflective of our reality."
